At room temperature, it is a yellow to orange viscous liquid or paste. Slightly bitter, soluble in water, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and toluene, insoluble in mineral oil and vegetable oil.
It's properties include emulsification, wetting, and foaming, and is an O/W type emulsifier with an HLB value of 15.6.
Used as an oil/water emulsifier, it can also be used as a solubilizer, stabilizer, dispersant, antistatic agent, and fiber lubricant, with wetting, foaming, and diffusion properties. This type of surfactant is non-toxic and can be used as an emulsifier in food and cosmetics. It is also commonly used as an emulsifier, softener, and lubricant for synthetic oil agents.
