It is a light yellow to amber oily liquid at room temperature. Slightly bitter, soluble in water, ethanol, ethyl acetate, and toluene, insoluble in mineral oil and vegetable oil.
It's properties include emulsification, wetting, and foaming, and is an O/W type emulsifier with an HLB value of 15.0.
Tween 80 can be used as a wetting agent, emulsifier, lubricant, dispersant, etc. It can also be used as a component of cotton and viscose cord oiling agents, and is also used in some eye drops. In the food industry, it can prevent splashing, slow down aging, and improve taste, and is commonly used as an emulsifier for ice cream. It is also used as an emulsifier in the production of polyurethane foam. In the laboratory, it can be used as a gas chromatography stationary liquid for separating alcohols, ketones, esters, hydrocarbon compounds, and fatty acids. Tween 80 is a non-ionic surfactant with significant resistance to electrolytes and strong hydrophilicity. It is an excellent O/W emulsifier, and high concentrations of electrolytes and changes in pH have little effect on its emulsifying ability. It has good emulsifying effects on vegetable oil, mineral oil, animal fats, and so on.
